"Were not going to talk about the lengths, but they have been extended." After a long first day with the full squad, Gonzalez said he was happy to have the contract issue out of the way. I found assembling this years list especially difficult and had to leave off albums I really enjoyed like Sloans Commonwealth, Drive-By Truckers English Oceans and The Rural Alberta Advantages Mended With Gold. You go Jenny. 19.TEMPLES -- SUN STRUCTURES -- Have you guys been watching Dave Grohls Sonic Highways on HBO? God its great. Yes I stop watching about 10 minutes before the episode ends so I dont have to watch Foo Fighters perform one of their new songs with lyrics inexplicably written across the screen (are we supposed to sing along?). Nonetheless the show itself is a wonderful document of the history of recorded music in eight different American cities, including Austin, where Dave chronicled the sad plight of 13th Floor Elevators lead singer Roky Erickson. How important was he to psychedelic rock? He invented it ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons said. So Temples owes a serious debt to Roky. Their record is derivative but good. Every time I play his music for someone who hasnt heard it they immediately go buy it or add it to their Spotify playlist. I Cant Do Without You, the first track, is a slow burner that eventually sounds like youre listening to an underwater dance party. 17. BECK -- MORNING PHASE -- I took my wife to Santa Barbara in the spring and we were sitting around the pool at our hotel and suddenly it was like a hipster convention broke out. These were hipster families. Little hipster kids with hipster hair frolicking in the pool, Moms wearing Aviator Nation hoodies and pregnant hipster girlfriends disregarding the signs that warned them about using the hot tub. What are all these people doing here? I wondered aloud as another man approached the group wearing an all-leather ensemble, a scarf, a fedora and sunglasses in sweltering hot Southern California. I dont know but that guy must be European my wife replied. It was Beck, who is from Los Angeles. This was his band and their families. They were playing a show in Santa Barbara that night, so we bought a pair of tickets and checked it out. He was a much more animated performer than I would ever have given him credit for. ALVVAYS -- ALVVAYS/STARS -- ALL IS LOST -- My Fox Sports Live colleague and former USC football captain Petros Papadakis listens to way more music than I do which is amazing considering he literally works seven days a week throughout the football season. He loves Alvvayss self-titled debut as much as I do and he has a major crush on Amy Millan of Stars. Petros also thought Canada was so small that I just ran into people like Amy at the airport. I promptly chastised him for being so ignorant about my country and regarding it as some sort of small town. About a month or so later, I was walking through the airport in Toronto and lo and behold there was Amy on her way to New York City to accompany Kevin Drew on Letterman. You win this round Petros. 14.COURTNEY BARNETT -- THE DOUBLE EP: A SEA OF SPLIT PEAS -- If you love Mac DeMarco as much as I do but after listening to his album for the seventh time of the day you find yourself saying: You know what would really be cool? STURGILL SIMPSON -- METAMODERN SOUNDS IN COUNTRY MUSIC -- There is not one single song I have listened to more in the past year than Sturgill Simpsons cover of When In Romes 1988 hit The Promise. Country fan or not, I promise you will love it. 12. CYMBALS EAT GUITARS -- LOSE -- Very 1990s, but good. Like if Mulaney had succeeded. 11/10. No one gets it. 8. NEW PORNOGRAPHERS -- BRILL BRUISERS -- As usual the Dan Bejar tracks are standouts for me, especially War on the East Coast. 7. STEPHEN MALKMUS AND THE JICKS -- WIGOUT AT JAGBAGS -- I really think its the best thing hes done since his self-titled solo debut. I also loved his interview with Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast. 6. SPOON -- THEY WANT MY SOUL -- You know that band that you liked before everyone else, and then it became big and you resented everyone for getting into it after you did and so you stopped liking it? Please North America, Im begging you to make that happen with this band. Spoon deserves to be filling stadiums and having people like me say: Their new stuff isnt nearly as good as Girls Can Tell, though it probably is. To me, this is another great effort from the most consistent group to emerge in indie-rock over the course of this young century (the online ratings website Metacritic even said so) 5. ERLAND OYE -- LEGAO -- This guy makes Real Estate sound like Pantera. He is mellow. His band Kings of Convenience is like Simon and Garfunkel on quaaludes. His band The Whitest Boy Alive is like Daft Punk on quaaludes. This is his solo debut and I read an interview where he called it his reggae album and that makes perfect sense, because when youre this mellow then reggae may be your best option. 4. THE WAR ON DRUGS -- LOST IN A DREAM -- These guys really like the Philadelphia 76ers. The least you can do is listen to their album. Theyve got to spend the entire year watching that team. 3. TY SEGALL -- MANIPULATOR -- Man I am giving Marc Maron way too many plugs on this list but if you want to become an instant Ty Segall fan dont start with the almost staggering amount of music he has released all at the tender age of 27 years old. Begin instead with Segalls WTF interview from just a few months ago where he talks about his upbringing in Orange County and his musical influences including Black Sabbaths Vol. 4 (He even has a Vol. 4 tattoo) I liked Segall a lot before this album, but to me he took a major step forward here. If youre looking for the album to play the loudest on this list here it is. If youre somewhat bored with Jack White, give this guy a try. 2. REAL ESTATE -- ATLAS -- In the spring I found myself home in Toronto one weekend, the same weekend that Real Estate happened to be playing in town. The bands lead guitarist Matt Mondanile asked me if I would introduce the band on stage. I was honored and completely nervous about the whole thing. How exactly does one introduce a band like Real Estate, whose smooth flowing grooves and lyrics about where youre from and where youre headed to didnt exactly lend themselves to WWE style ring announcer pageantry. F--k it, I thought, I will go with WWE style ring announcer pageantry anyway. I wanted to get the crowd pumped up, especially in Toronto where concert crowds are sometimes so infuriatingly quiet I want to start a fight just to make sure everyone is awake. The ring announcer bit worked, the crowd turned out to be great, and the band was as kind and grateful as you could imagine. That sounded rehearsed! said the bands keyboard player Matt Kallman about my introduction. Maybe I have a future as a hype man if this whole sports broadcasting thing doesnt work out. 1. MAC DeMARCO -- SALAD DAYS -- How could this gap-toothed, chain-smoking slacker have done it? How could he top a list of such incredible albums in one of the best years of music in recent memory? The songs man, its the songs. The guy can be hilarious when hes helping people back up their cars and surprisingly poignant when hes penning lyrics. This is a record that will give the listener a different experience depending on where he or she plays it: Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway in your rented Ford Mustang Convertible? Crank it up and rip the knob off because those guitars are sweet bliss. Sitting down with a tumbler of Japanese Whiskey after a devastating loss at Pub Trivia Night? Let Macs smooth melodies erase all memories of defeat. Ready to drift off on that business flight to Ithaca? Youll be humming the tune of Blue Boy by the time you land. Salad Days indeed. DETROIT -- After scoring 39 goals in their first eight games, the San Jose Sharks proved they can play pretty well defensively, too. Despite being down by four goals after the first period and rallying back to tie the game, the IceCaps lost 8-7 in overtime to the Springfield Falcons in American Hockey League action Friday. Comrie made 36 saves in his first pro game, after taking over from goalie Tyler Beskorowany 9:30 into the first period. "It was a fun game, no matter what," Comrie said. "Hockey is a fun sport and I have fun every time I go on the ice. It was an incredible crowd out there." IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said there are positives to be taken from the rally back from his team. "Being down 5-1 in the first period, and then to manage to get the lead in that game really speaks volumes of the character in that room," McCambridge said. McCambridge spoke highly of his back-up goalie, saying Comrie was "real sharp" in net. "Coming in under those circumstances, to come into that game against an excellent team, I thought he performed really well," he said. Springfields Sean Collins won the game in overtime, scoring with a quick wrister at the 2:50 mark of the extra frame. Jack Skille scored four goals in a five-point performance to lead the Falcons (43-20-6), while Carter Camper and Matt Taormina also scored. Patrice Cormier scored twice for St. Johns (41-22-5). Andrew Gordon, John Albert, Jerome Samson, Kyle MacKinnon and Carl Klingberg had a goal apiece. Sixteen seconds later, Bass scored a near-identical goal, finishing a cross-crease play on the same post. By the end of the year he has a multi-year contract in his pocket at the best team in Formula One, Williams-Renault. Within two years Villeneuve is World Champion and is a star everywhere he goes. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis 500 continues on without him. As Villeneuve departed for Europe, IndyCar split in two and has never fully recovered from the bitter divorce. The Indy 500s list of drivers in the late 90s lacked real star power and it lost a grip on being the biggest race in the world. Slowly the giant teams like Penske, Ganassi and Andretti returned and with them came world class, elite drivers. For some ten years now, the Indy 500 is back to what it once was, testing some of the greatest single-seater drivers the world has to offer. It is the second Sunday in May and Jacques Villeneuve, now 43, drives back inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dressed in a yellow race suit with Dollar General written all over it he looks nothing like what many would expect a former F1 World Champion to look. He doesnt have the amount of hair he once had but he is back at Indy as a driver, the first time in 19 years. He stops to sign autographs and pose for photographs as he makes that famous walk, paved by greatness, that the likes of A.J. Foyt, Jim Clark, Rick Mears and other stars have taken, alongside Gasoline Alley to the pit lane. The diehard fans stare and flock towards him but he is far from the main attraction at the Speedway. Villeneuve, not a regular on the IndyCar circuit, does remarkably well with attention but here he is just another driver, one that doesnt travel in packs with fellow drivers. He is a man from past glories back to recreate new memories of his own. "I hardly know anyone to be honest. I know (Takuma) Sato, but I never raced against him and I have never raced against anyone who is a regular in this series. That is weird because I dont know what to expect, I dont know how they race. Which one is clean? Dirty? Crazy? So its definitely a bit strange, yes." The answer is typical Jacques. He talks of not knowing anyone but immediately he means as drivers, not as men. Our conversation immediately turns to scenarios that can take place on the track. Villeneuve doesnt talk in clichés and for someone who has done as much media as he has in his life, he remains a refreshingly deep-thinker who can take you on the same journey as his mind. We talk about this upcoming Sunday and the Indy 500, and the point when he will be travelling in excess of 230 miles per hour with cars all around him. His eyes squint as he dictates word-for-word his precise thoughts as he gets set to compete in what he describes as the biggest race in the world. "The complexity of this race now is running in traffic. The cars have two hundred horsepower less than 19 years ago and much more grip and to be able to stay super close to the cars, while everyone is running flat out, the key is to stay close to someone else, (ready for) when he has to lift, back out a little bit because of the traffic in front of him, then you steal his momentum. "Thats really tough, ass you get in the turbulent air behind someone, your whole car is shaking and thats when the car starts sliding and you can lose the front end or the rear end a little bit and, at that point, do you have the guts to keep your foot down or not and is your car working in that situation?" Villeneuve, who will start, fittingly, in the 27th spot for Sundays race, continues: "I will be surrounded by guys who respect the danger and others who think its a video game and, at those speeds, its risky and thats what I still dont know, who to trust and who not to trust out there. With more grip and less horsepower, the cars are very forgiving. I have got sideways a few times already this month and if I did that 19 years ago I would have been in the wall. "I think they give a false sense of security for some of the drivers and thats why you see kids coming in and, within three laps, they are flat out because I dont think they respect how dangerous it is. Once you get caught out, then you start respecting it and at Indianapolis there are two kinds of drivers, the ones who have hit the wall and the ones who havent hit the wall." It is clear Villeneuve is almost as concerned about those who havent hit the wall than hitting the wall himself. "This is not a track where you want to make a mistake. The speeds we go is exciting, it is unparalleled. It is a long race and my approach (in the past) was to mind your own business and it will come to you. You have to know when to take a risk and when not to. Normally in the first half, the idiots will crash themselves out so if you can stay clean to 100 laps then that can be useful!" There arent too many drivers in IndyCar who will refer to some of the colleagues as idiots but this is what comes with the honest, direct Villeneuve who survived the world of Formula One without turning into a robot, something very few have done in recent years. He admits he still watches Formula One but not the same way he once did: "I dont like or understand the reason behind the new rules but we have had some amazing races this year. Why? Only because the teammates have been allowed to fight. When you had Prost and Senna (at McLaren in the late 80s) they would lap the field but everyone was happy so we have a bit of that now with Lewis (Hamilton) and Nico (Rosberg). "The rules themselves, though, are not F1. The sport should be out of this world, not reality. You should look at it and say thats crazy how do these guys manage to drive these kinds of cars at those speeds. In the original turbo engine era they would do qualifying and then throw the engine in the garbage. Thats F1. It should be so extreme that when you are at home, and you are not a racer, you know thats another world. Now you are at home and think I could do that. There is nothing special about it anymore." The man who won 11 Grand Prix races has never been one to focus too much on the past but it is clear he knows those eras were far superior to modern day F1. He smiles when asked about the 1997 season but moves off from it as quickly as it comes up. "It was fun but I dont dwell on the past, I never have and thats why I want my kids to see me drive. I dont want to be for my kids, the guy that used to race that they can see in books." Those books tell a remarkable tale of one of the finest Canadians to ever compete in any sport. He was suspended for two games in 2011 for stomping on an opponent. Suh is entering the last year of his contract, and is scheduled to count more than $20 million against the salary cap this season.
